Background of the Study:
Freedom of worship is a fundamental human right enshrined in international human rights law, as well as in the Nigerian Constitution. However, despite legal guarantees, religious freedom remains a contentious issue in many parts of Nigeria. Kebbi City, the capital of Kebbi State, has a diverse population with a significant number of both Muslim and Christian communities. Although Kebbi State is predominantly Muslim, there are a considerable number of non-Muslim residents who may face challenges in freely practicing their religion.

This study aims to investigate the state of religious freedom in Kebbi City, exploring the challenges faced by individuals in exercising their right to worship. The study will focus on the extent to which religious practices are restricted or facilitated, the role of government and local authorities in ensuring religious freedom, and any discrimination or intolerance that may exist between religious groups.

Statement of the Problem:
In Kebbi City, religious freedom has become a matter of concern, particularly for minority religious groups who face challenges in expressing their beliefs openly. Despite constitutional protections, individuals in Kebbi may still experience discrimination, harassment, or restrictions in practicing their religion. This study will investigate the level of religious freedom in Kebbi City and evaluate the impact of local dynamics, policies, and interfaith relationships on the ability of individuals to practice their religion freely.

  2. What challenges do minority religious groups face in practicing their religion in Kebbi City?

  3. How do government policies and interfaith relationships impact the freedom of worship in Kebbi City?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Religious minorities in Kebbi City face discrimination and limitations in practicing their faith.

  2. Government policies and local authorities are ineffective in ensuring full religious freedom for all groups in Kebbi City.

  3. The presence of interfaith conflicts negatively affects the freedom of worship in Kebbi City.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on the freedom of worship in Kebbi City, Kebbi State. Limitations include difficulties in obtaining data from sensitive religious groups and potential resistance to discussing issues of religious discrimination due to societal and cultural factors.
